If you’ve adopted a shelter dog, you may know how gut-wrenching it can be to fall head over heels in love with a dog but not be able to bring it home. Maybe someone else calls dibs before you, or maybe the dog isn’t quite ready for adoption and when you come back, he/she is gone.
I can relate. I spent two hours petting puppies at North Shore Animal League and fell in love with a black lab the minute her cage was wheeled in. It could have been a slow-motion scene from any love story, in fact. I turned and saw her, she looked up at me with her droopy lips and loving eyes, and I knew she was mine. But before I could reach a worker to spring her from her cage, another employee was handing her to a couple that was talking and playing with her. It was hard to watch. If they chose her, she’d go with them, not me. Oh, the suspense, not to mention rattling nerves. After what seemed like an eternity, the couple moved on to meet another dog. That’s when I scooped her up and never let her go.
American Horror Story’s Zachary Quinto has a similar experience, and it left such an impression on him, he decided to turn it into a digital short called, “Dog Eat Dog.”
